Flight of the Fantail

By Steph Matuku

Flight of the Fantail

A busload of high school students crashes in bush in a remote part of Aotearoa New Zealand. Only a few of the teenagers survive; they find their phones don’t work, there’s no food, and they’ve only got their wits to keep them alive. There’s also something strange happening here. Why are the teenagers having nosebleeds and behaving erratically, and why is the rescue effort slow to arrive? To make it out, they have to discover what’s really going on and who or what is behind it all.

Product Review

With short chapters and a fast pace, this is an addictive novel and a great read for those who enjoy a gritty, gory adventure story. Even better, it is set in the wild unpredictable nature of our own country (Aotearoa). Rosalie Elliffe for Booksellers NZ
Wowee! What a great book. I'm so not a fan of sci-fi but this defies the genre. A great YA book that is gripping; a real page turner. The story follows many threads but it's easy to keep track of. Matuku is a fantastic writer, it's poetic without being overbearing. I can definitely see this being made into a film too. A wonderful addition to the NZ YA scene. Read it. This is the kind of book I wish I could have read growing up. A story set in Aotearoa with kids just like me and my mates from high school. In fact every character in the book was just like someone I knew from school. Even though it was an exceptional and one off event (bus falling off a cliff, kids get lost) the kiwiness of the kids made the story relatable e.g. Rocky, the hot Maori boy saying 'bro' all the time.

I found myself turning each page furiously, and then getting shocked at what I just read, and then turning the page again furiously for more! I laughed out loud at some of the words that came out of the characters mouths lol very very relatable.

There's a lot of good messages in this book too. Theres Devlin who has been bullied her whole life. You can feel her insecurities throughout the narrative. I won't give away too much but there is redemption and love! I believe this book would be great for high school students to study for English class. Awesome debut novel from Steph Matuku. 5-star review by Shilo Kino on Goodreads
