by Hannah Rainforth

This book tells the story of a child of Maori and Aboriginal descent who lives in Canberra, Australia. The narrative covers his daily activities such as school and extra-curricular interests, as well as special events like visiting relatives in Sydney and meeting the 'snake man'. The book introduces students to Australian history, Dreamtime beliefs and some concepts of Aboriginal art. It looks at language use and loss, traditional dancing as well as the kapa haka and kohanga groups the family belong to in Australia. The resource looks at Australian animals and also discusses concepts of the natural world and the role of animals as kaitiaki. It draws connections between the experiences of indigenous peoples in the two countries, New Zealand and Australia, and provides students in Maori-medium classrooms with a window to the world of Aboriginal Australia.
