Description

He Hoa Pūmau focuses on a group of four friends, Wai, Kuini, Kapua and Hare, all aged between 9 and 10. They find a strange object like a chunky sea slug with kōwhaiwhai patterns etched into it. It has magical power, as it fills them with a sense of warmth when they hold it. The friends take the object to the beach and submerge it in water. It opens to reveal a taonga that separates into four magical pieces, and they each take one. The wear their taonga to a kapa haka competition, and they feel its magical power giving them confidence as they perform. The purpose of this book is to help readers graduate from picture books to more text heavy chapter books
