Karlo Mila

Karlo Mila med

Karlo Mila is a poet with a MSW (Applied) in Social Work from Massey University and has worked as a trade union organiser, a teacher and a health research manager. Karlo has lived and worked in Tongā and her writing tends to reflect her revolving insider/outsider status within both Palagi and Tongān cultures.

Dream Fish Floating, Karlo’s first collection of poetry, won the 2006 NZSA Jessie Mackay Award for Best First Book of Poetry at the Montana New Zealand Book Awards. Karlo’s work has also been anthologised in Whetu Moana: Contemporary Polynesian Poems in English, and Short Fuse: The Global Anthology of New Fusion Poetry. In 2008 Karlo collaborated with German-born artist Delicia Sampero to produce A Well Written Body.
