Huia Book on Constitutional Change provokes debate

The latest book by Malcolm Mulholland, 'Weeping Waters - The Treaty of Waitangi and Constitutional Change', to be launched at Waitangi Day 2010 is already provoking debate with a feature article in the Sunday Star-Times (31 January 2010).Weeping_Waters_poster.jpg

The book features essays from eighteen well-known and respected Maori figures including Professor Margaret Mutu, Bishop Muru Walters, Judge Caren Fox and lawyer Moana Jackson.

The wide-ranging essay topics include:

  • the development of Māori movements;
  • Constitution-making in the Pacific;
  • the Treaty of Waitangi and Parliament's multi-cameral system;
  • principles developed by the Waitangi Tribunal;
  • the views of individual iwi and hapū toward pan-tribal organisations;
  • the role of urban Māori authorities;
  • the Anglican Church model;
  • Māori representation within the House of Representatives; and
  • the role of local government.

The chapter by Malcolm suggests that finding a new name for New Zealand along with a new flag and national anthem are all worth debating if the New Zealand constitution is to recognise the Treaty of Waitangi.

The book will be officially launched on Saturday 6 February 2010 and will be available in bookstores and here on the Huia website from March 2010.
