Mere Clarke (Ngāti Porou) is a resource teacher of Māori and a mother of thirteen. She lives in Gisborne, where she is further developing her writing. Her book, Whirinoki and the Seal is a beautiful book that brings to life the East Coast legend that explains the Gisborne place-name Puna Hinu.
When Whirikoki and his seal rested on the rocks, they would dream, gazing upon the hills above the valley of Turanganui. The longer they looked at the hills, the more they wanted to visit there.
